Welcome to Visit Augusta GA blog

Antonio’s Italian Eatery

I consider myself a bit of a pizza aficionado…maybe a ‘pizza addict’ is a better way to put it. Either way, I love pizza and all Italian food, really. So I was really excited to see a new restaurant open up in North Augusta.  Right across the river from downtown Augusta, Antonio’s Italian Eatery did not disappoint!  I visited the first time with several of my coworkers, including a few New Yorkers, who are also very serious about their pizza and they loved it.

It has now become one of my favorite lunch spots for many reasons.  They offer several different ‘slice specials’ during lunchtime and service is fairly quick so you can get in and get out and get back to work.  You really can’t beat two slices and a drink for less than $6, and they aren’t tiny slices, either!  A couple of weeks ago I went with a friend of mine and two of her kids.  They loved it, too, although I’ve never met a kid that didn’t like pizza!

Antonio’s has a great location downtown with a friendly atmosphere. I can’t wait to visit again and try some more of their Italian specialties like spaghetti & meatballs and lasagna!

Bluegrass Music at the Imperial Theater

Who could have ever imagined that a New Yorker would fall in love with Bluegrass music?! Well, I did. Last Friday, after enjoying some great pizza and cider in good company with dear friends at the Pizza Joint,  I went to the Imperial Theatre (for the first time…I’m ashamed to say, since my children go at least twice a year) to see one of the Southern Soul and Song Concert Series, sponsored by the Morris Museum of Art. The Kenny and Amanda Smith Band opened for Blue Highway.

Both bands were bluegrass genre, but both had a very unique style. I must say that I was a bit apprehensive to go see a bluegrass band-not to my liking at all; but a few of my friends convinced me to go. I’m very glad that I went, I loved it! I was not only fascinated by the vocals and the soulful attitude that the bands had, but also by the instruments and the wonderful sounds that they made. Never thought that so many different types of string instruments all put together can produce such sweet, fun and folkloric music. I had a great time and became an instant fan. I hear that another concert not to miss is Marty Stewart and his Fabulous Superlatives, coming in March at the Imperial Theatre…Hey, if this is country music, I say why not! Just being in the Imperial and part of a great Augusta experience is worth broadening my horizons!

Mellow Mushroom and Stillwater Tap Room

Mellow Mushroom

Downtown Augusta really has a lot to offer!  One of my favorite places to eat in Augusta is the Mellow Mushroom.  The downtown location has a really laidback atmosphere and unique architecture. The restaurant is housed in a renovated gas station, with perfect spots to dine inside or outside and enjoy the hustle and bustle of Broad Street.  It is a great place to stop by for a hoagie or a slice at lunch, with nearly any kind of pizza topping imaginable. Their garlic and parmesan pretzels with marinara dipping sauce are always a great way to start off your meal and their salads, calzones and pizzas really are to die for!  Since the Mellow Mushroom is in such a great location in downtown Augusta it is within walking distance of Riverwalk and several other  attractions like Springfield Village Park and Artist’s Row.  And if you come downtown to the ‘Shroom for supper, be sure to take a stroll along Broad Street after you are finished.  You never know what kind of nightlife you might find at Augusta’s bars and pubs!

Stillwater Tap Room

If you enjoy the casual vibe of the Mellow Mushroom, then you will definitely enjoy Stillwater Tap Room, located just two blocks down Broad Street in Downtown.  They have a great selection of beers and spirits for you to enjoy while sitting in one of their rocking chairs.  You can also challenge your friends to pool or darts upstairs or relax at the bar while taking in one of the bluegrass bands that usually plays.  For more information on Stillwater and a live music schedule, click here or call 706-826-9857.
