Afternoon in the Living History Park

When the weather’s nice outside, one of my favorite things to do is grab a quick lunch and take it to the Living History Park. It’s right across the river in North Augusta and is about 5 minutes from downtown Augusta. It’s a public park that’s being transformed into a mini-settlement, complete with colonial style church, tavern and meeting place. Each year something new gets added.

I like to stroll around the park and look at the buildings or go sit in the garden and just enjoy the weather! What most people don’t realize is that there are monthly and annual events held at the park regularly. There’s “Last Saturday in the Park” which is the last Saturday of the month from January through November where parents can bring their kids for an interactive history experience. Or they’ve got events like “Spirits of Hallowed Eve” and “Colonial Times” each fall and “Christmas in the Backwoods” each winter. No matter when you come, it’s always like you stepped back in history!

So make time during your next visit to stop by and enjoy the Living History Park. And if you’re in town during one of thier events, make sure you go!

Antonio’s Pizza Doesn’t Disappoint!

Recently my mom introduced me to Antonio’s Italian Eatery. It’s about 5 minutes from downtown Augusta over the river in North Augusta.

You’ll recognize it from the cute red and white striped canopy shading the front entrance.

We went for lunch and ordered a White Pizza – garlic, olive oil, spinach and tomatos – and we were NOT disappointed!

The regular crust is perfectly salty, bready and a little crunchy. The toppings tasted fresh and flavorful. Since we ordered a 14 inch pizza, it took slightly longer than if we had ordered single slices, but having leftovers to take home for dinner made the wait TOTALLY worth it!

Inside was cool, clean and simply decorated and our server was very helpful.

I plan on going back very soon to try their slice specials, which are super affordable and seem perfect for lunch!

Antonio’s Italian Eatery

I consider myself a bit of a pizza aficionado…maybe a ‘pizza addict’ is a better way to put it. Either way, I love pizza and all Italian food, really. So I was really excited to see a new restaurant open up in North Augusta.  Right across the river from downtown Augusta, Antonio’s Italian Eatery did not disappoint!  I visited the first time with several of my coworkers, including a few New Yorkers, who are also very serious about their pizza and they loved it.

It has now become one of my favorite lunch spots for many reasons.  They offer several different ‘slice specials’ during lunchtime and service is fairly quick so you can get in and get out and get back to work.  You really can’t beat two slices and a drink for less than $6, and they aren’t tiny slices, either!  A couple of weeks ago I went with a friend of mine and two of her kids.  They loved it, too, although I’ve never met a kid that didn’t like pizza!

Antonio’s has a great location downtown with a friendly atmosphere. I can’t wait to visit again and try some more of their Italian specialties like spaghetti & meatballs and lasagna!

The BBQ Barn

One of the best parts of living in the south is the abundance of barbecue joints, and this is especially true in Augusta. Since we are right on the border of Georgia and South Carolina we get to enjoy all kinds of barbecue goodness. The cooking method for the meat can be similar sometimes, but the sauces in Georgia tend to be more tomato based and the Carolina sauces use mustard and vinegar bases.  They are both delicious in my book!  When the weather is nice during the spring and fall, you can enjoy your barbecue on the patio.

When I start craving a delicious pulled pork barbecue sandwich, I head across the Savannah River to the BBQ Barn.  They have a really relaxed atmosphere, delicious food, and a variety of barbecue sauces to compliment their meat!  My husband and I usually get the pulled pork sandwich basket, which comes with your choice of side. My choice is almost always french fries, since they are always hot and fresh!  Add on a sweet tea and our bill is about $12. You can’t beat that for delicious barbecue, especially when they also offer tasty desserts, too. We’ve tried the red velvet cake and the Oreo cake and they are both scrumptious!

If you are in the mood to ‘pig out’ on some barbecue while you are visiting Augusta, you should definitely venture across the river to try out the BBQ Barn.
