The Machine hits the A-U-G!

The country music duo, Sugarland, rocked a sold-out James Brown Arena on Thursday night, June 23. I can honestly say it was one of the best concerts I have ever been to, and Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush were nothing shy of amazing!

The duo sang several of their well-known/award-winning hits including: “Settlin,” “Stay,” “All I Want To Do,” “It Happens,” “Every Day America,” “Who Says You Can’t Go Home,” and of course, “Baby Girl,” “for fans who have been there from the beginning,” she said. And the crowd sang along; the energy was high and everyone was having a good time. They also sang songs from their newest album, Incredible Machine: “Stuck Like Glue,” “Tonight,” “Little Miss,” “Shine The Light” and “Every Girl Like Me” are my favorites!

The duo seemed right at home in the Garden City. Nettles even gave a shout-out to local trendsetter and business owner CoCo Rubio, owner of Sky City and Soul Bar. Nettles said she remembers the days before she “hit it big” playing shows at the Soul Bar and drinking $1 PBR specials; a special that is still offered today!

Being born and raised in Douglas, GA, a short drive from Augusta, the crowd was full of her family and friends. Even her high school band director was there; she jokes saying that it was a good thing the “audience hit all their P’s and Q’s.”

It was one of the best shows I have been to in a long time! I cannot wait to see another show at the James Brown Arena when Keith Urban takes the stage on Saturday, August 13 right here in Augusta, GA! Will you be there?

Harlem Globetrotters come to Augusta!

Guest Blog Submission by Carly Kobasiar of the Augusta Sports Council

The Harlem Globetrotters came to Augusta for a one-night only engagement at James Brown Arena. I remember going to a Globetrotters game as a little girl and enjoying their wild antics, so when I heard they were coming to Augusta I knew I had to see them again!

The Harlem Globetrotters have been entertaining audiences for 85 years. They have performed for everyone from Presidents to Popes and have dunked their way into the hearts of basketball fans of all ages.

Fun for the entire family!

The show began with some cool break-dancing moves to the unmistakable sounds of the Globetrotters’ theme song, “Sweet Georgia Brown.” It really got the crowd going as the Globetrotter’s took the floor and the game was underway!

Globetrotters breaking it down.

The basketball game was almost secondary, as the Globetrotter’s fancy ball-handling and awesome slam dunks steal the show. If you go to a game and you are lucky to have tickets on the sideline, there’s a good chance that they will make you part of the show! Everyone is a target at the Globetrotter’s game, from little kids, to grandparents!

Slam Dunk!

Want to be part of the show?

The Globetrotter’s won the game 89-77, which was no surprise since their hapless opponents, the Washington Generals haven’t won a game since 1971!

The Harlem Globetrotters game was just one of many events held at Augusta’s James Brown Arena. The venue hosts sporting events, concerts and trade show throughout the year. Visit http://www.jamesbrownarena.com/ for more information.

Augusta Futurity at the James Brown Arena in Augusta, Georgia

The Augusta Futurity is a fantastic event that comes to Augusta, Georgia every January. It is a first-class World Championship event for cutting horse competitors. But it is also fun for the kids.

This year I took William, 4, and Jacob, 2, to the Friday Night Event at the James Brown Arena in downtown Augusta. This is the night for the 5/6 Year-Old Classic Non-Pro and Open Finals. Do not ask me what the means – but I think it has something to do with the age of the horse.

At any rate, we actually went earlier to see the Area 18 Youth Scholarship Finals. These are riders under the age of 18 competing for a scholarship. It was great fun. We got to see boys and girls ride horses and cut the cows. Click here to see a little bit of the action! The youngest rider we saw was 10 years old and he did great. William enjoyed watching the kids compete.  Jacob was more into the popcorn. He is two – what can I say?

Before the competition began there were several cowboys settling the herd. This is when William leaned over to me and said, “Mom, some of those cows are wearing earrings.” He was dead serious and I had to laugh.

On the way out we stopped at several vendors and checked out the fun stuff they had to offer. Lots of great cowboy boots, hats, saddles and jewelry. William and Jacob loved the local hand carved statues. And of course the tractors – they are boys.

Be sure to make plans to attend the Augusta Futurity in Augusta, Georgia at the end of January every year. And bring the family!

Carrie Underwood in Augusta

What happens when you have a sold out show for one of the most famous country music stars in the heart of downtown Augusta? You get CARRIE UNDERWOOD in concert at the James Brown Arena! My best friend Crystal and I headed out for Girls Night Out in downtown Augusta to see our favorite female country singer, right here in our hometown! We were in our cowgirl boots and ready to sing all of Carrie’s songs out loud.

Carrie put on an outstanding show with great props, costume changes, and lots of screaming fans that filled the arena. This was definitely one of the best acts that has been to James Brown Arena this year. What a great show and a great time we had. Just another fun night out in Augusta! We are already looking forward to country stars and hometown heroes Lady Antebellum, coming to Augusta in November!!!

Monster Truck Show

Are you ready to RUUUUUUUUMMMMMMBBBBBBLLLLLLEEE?  Did you bring your ear plugs?  Because you’ll definitely need them at the Monster Truck show that my family and I recently attended at the James Brown Arena in Augusta.

There’s never a shortage of things to do with your family in Augusta, and this Monster Truck, Freestyle Motorcross, ATV, and BMX show was certainly an example of that.  My husband, my 16 year old step-son, Matt, and our 6 year old son Brandon had a blast watching these incredible machines smash old jalopies to smithereens. The boys, couldn’t take their eyes off of (not me, some of the time I covered my eyes it was so dangerous) the motorcycle and ATV riders as they took death defying leaps into the air, flipping from one ramp to another and even doing handstands on the handlebars.  The skill of the BMX bikers was incredible as they powered over ramps, jumped over a girl sitting in a chair, and made their bikes bend in their hands like silly-putty.

The entire show was really family friendly.  After it ended the riders signed hundreds of autographs for kids and fans of all ages.  Of course the popcorn and Coke was a treat and the company of our neighbors in the seats nearby was great!

We’ve still got the earplugs, ready for the next time we’re ready for the roar of monster trucks, the sweet smell of exhaust and the awesome aroma of burning tires!
