Say CHEESE (Steak)

I recently discovered another of Augusta’s hidden gems. Jackie M’s Restaurant on Milledgeville Road is a cool little spot.  It’s a family run business that features delicious Philly Cheese Steak Subs (bread baked on the premises daily), seasoned fries, and to-die-for cheesecake.  I had the red velvet cheesecake. But they also offer German Chocolate, Classic with Strawberry Topping, and Key Lime.  Check out the menu for all the other great offerings!

Jackie and her son came out to our table to talk with us and we learned that while she is the top chef she has 2 others that specialize in Jamaican and Spanish eats.  Her son does the baking and her husband’s artwork is displayed throughout the restaurant.  The atmosphere is right up my alley – relaxed, with R&B tunes playing in the background!

Manuel’s Bread Cafe

Just across the 13th Street Bridge in South Carolina, Manuel’s Bread Café sits in the center of the new traditionally-designed neighborhood of Hammond’s Ferry.

Manuel’s Bread Café is part French bakery, part casual dining with a seasonal menu that features twists on French dishes from the chef’s hometown of Lyon, wonderful salads, and locally grown organic produce.

We were arriving for lunch and opted to eat outdoors to enjoy the seasonably warm February sun.

After hearing about the daily specials, I ordered a half sandwich and soup that consisted of a great French onion soup paired with a half Croque Monsieur sandwich which is grilled black forest ham and swiss cheese topped with herbed béchamel on their own homemade bread.  It was great!

The swordfish atop a salad served with a side of fries was great too.

The café is just a leisurely stroll from the Savannah River so be sure to enjoy a post-meal walk along its banks or sit on the dock, enjoy the breeze, and possibly watch crew teams row past or people enjoying wakeboarding.

Boll Weevil Cafe and Sweetery

I had a lunch date with a few friends the other day. We decided to meet at Boll Weevil Cafe and Sweetery located on 9th Street in Downtown Augusta and catch up and of course eat!  This restaurant has a little bit of everything. It offers some traditional southern dishes like fried green tomatoes and shrimp and grits, there is plentiful  wine selection available by either the glass or the bottle and also several out-of-this-world homemade desserts. As a matter of fact, the readers of Augusta Magazine have voted the sweetery Best Desserts for four years in a row!

Michelle had the Havanna Chicken, grilled chicken rubbed with jerk seasoning served with dirty rice and black beans with cheese.

Leza had the Mahi Mahi, an 8 oz. mahi fillet blackened and served over dirty rice with a cream sauce.

Tamara and I had the half and half special with the Curious George Sandwich, which is turkey topped with spinach dip and provolone cheese. I had the Caesar side salad and Tamara had the vegetable soup with her sandwich. It was Delicious!

And of course we had to have some of their award-winning dessert! We decided to split one of their famous desserts, the 7th Heaven Cake, two rich chocolate layers of cake sandwiching a layer of cheesecake covered in butter cream, topped with ganache and chocolate chips. So tasty, but so large, between the four of us had trouble finishing it!

The cafe offers fantastic lunch and dinner specials, but are known in the Augusta area mostly for their desserts. Check them out!
